What does it cost to care for the cats at Perry’s Place?

Heaven on Earth has evolved over the past seven years. Earlier in our history, we primarily provided long term sanctuary for senior and special needs cats, as well as those with chronic but treatable illness. Since that time, we have expanded our lifesaving mission to any and all cats in need.
We have increased our total intakes from 141 in 2012, to 950 in 2019. 95% originate from LA City shelters, where they have no other options. More than 1,200 cats will pass through Perry’s Place this year.
The cats we take in from area shelters are a diverse population and the cost of care is significant, no matter how healthy or sick the kitties are at intake. Simple expenses like food, litter, and basic vet care add up quickly… And that’s just the beginning!
Over the course of one year, we will spend almost $350K on the cost of care for 700 kittens. Taking promotions into account, we may recoup approximately $50K in adoption fees, leaving us a deficit of $300K.

ANNUAL BASIC EXPENSES
Annual Basic Expenses: $294k
Food: $50k
The cost to feed a cat for a month can vary greatly based on the health and age of the cat. Kitten food is expensive!
Litter: $15k
All cats use litter, and the kittens often need daily multiple box cleanings
Medical Supplies: $7k
We pulled 150 medical cats from shelters this year alone. Added to our sanctuary population, we are actively caring for an average of almost 75 cats a month that need specialized care or medicine.
Veterinary Procedures: $80k
Dental extractions, corrective entropion, and amputations are just a few of the costly procedures we provided to our population this year.
Printing Costs: $10k
Printed materials are necessary - even in this digital age! The cost of marketing materials, office supplies, and mail campaigns alone went well over 10K in 2019.
Facility Costs: $132k
Our 5500 square foot facility carries a mortgage, and needs annual repairs and upgrades. That’s not counting the cost of utilities and insurance.
This is where you come in.

Ringworm is a simple fungus that is non-fatal, easily treated, and usually cured within a few months. Unfortunately, it is a death sentence in many Los Angeles shelters due to the space and time required to treat it. Heaven on Earth has made a commitment to saving these cats. During the height of ringworm last year, we were treating 70 cats with ringworm! This requires considerable additional staff time to bathe the infected cats twice a week, usually for from 4-8 weeks before they are clear, and to provide daily medications.
Seniors for Seniors:
$10,000
***NEW PROGRAM*** Having identified a cohort of three pet friendly senior living centers, we expect to establish cat therapy rooms at each facility for the residents. Our hope is to provide a place for the residents to pet the cats in residence and enjoy their company, while at the same time opening more cat space at Perry’s Place. Ultimately, we expect that some of the residents in the independent living apartments at the senior centers will adopt cats from the therapy room. The $10,000 will fund our staff cost in supporting this program, as well as any medications needed to maintain the health of the senior cats in residence. We expect the senior living centers to furnish the cat therapy rooms and provide food and litter.
