On September 26, 2015, we will be celebrating the lives and work of three innovative and heroic figures in the Los Angeles rescue community. Here is a closer look at the groundbreaking work of Mark Dodge and Karn Myers.
Mark Dodge and Karn Myers, a husband and wife team, founded two of Los Angeles’ most impactful community cat programs to date — Best Friends Catnippers, and the full-time spay/neuter clinic, FixNation.
Mark brought his experience as a business executive and attorney with over 30 years of international experience in a wide range of industries to the development of these organizations. Having served as General Counsel of major corporations including Financial Corporation of America (NYSE) and Western International Media Corp., Mark was well suited to provide the pro bono legal guidance to FixNation as well as contribute to the formation of several other unaffiliated animal welfare organizations. Mr. Dodge holds a B.A. from UCLA and a J.D. degree from California Western University.
Karn has extensive experience in the business world, having served as executive assistant to Chief Executives in various industries, including international matters. Her time in college, officer training at First Interstate Bank and real estate license school, together with her experience in executive support, office management and office technology, set Karn up ideally to become Executive Director of FixNation, where she has served full-time since operations were launched in January of 2007.
Since launching Catnippers and FixNation, Mark and Karn have become important players in the animal welfare world, assisting with the drafting of LA City’s feral cat policy, partnering with the nation’s largest animal foundations including Best Friends Animal Society, PetSmart Charities, ASPCA, and HSUS, and serving on the NKLA Steering Committee. Although their lives have changed dramatically since Mark was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, their commitment to one another and to the cats of Los Angeles remains firm.
We hope you can join us on September 26, 2015, to thank Mark and Karn for their ceaseless dedication to community cats and to our shared vision of turning Los Angeles into a no-kill city.
